What is the Foot and Ankle MSK service?

The Foot and Ankle Musculoskeletal (MSK) Service provides specialist assessment and management of complex or persistent foot and ankle problems.
Our clinicians are highly trained in musculoskeletal health and have advanced expertise in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect how the foot and ankle move, function, and bear weight.

This service is part of the Tier 2 MSK pathway, offering expert input for patients who require further assessment beyond Tier 1 physiotherapy.

Do I need a referral?

Yes. A referral from your GP or First Contact Practitioner is required to access the Foot and Ankle MSK Service. This ensures you receive the right level of specialist care.

How long are appointments?

Appointments usually last 30 minutes, depending on your condition and the type of assessment or treatment required. Follow-up appointments may be arranged based on your individual care plan.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

To help your clinician make a thorough assessment:

  • Bring any relevant medical reports, imaging results, or footwear you use regularly.
  • Wear clothing that allows easy access to your feet and lower legs.
  • List any current medications and previous treatments.
  • Be prepared to discuss your daily activities, footwear habits, and exercise levels.
Can the MSK service help prevent future problems?

Yes. As part of your care, you’ll receive advice on strengthening, posture, footwear, and activity modification to help prevent recurrence and maintain long-term foot and ankle health. Early management can reduce the risk of chronic pain or further injury.

What happens after my appointment?

Following your assessment, your clinician will:

  • Provide a clear diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Offer self-management and rehabilitation advice.
  • Arrange follow-up sessions or imaging if required.
